Visa has announced new collaborations with QR payment providers across the Asia Pacific region, marking a significant move toward enhancing integrated, cross-border digital payments.
Through these partnerships, Visa will enable consumers to use their digital wallets for QR-based transactions when traveling abroad.
This pilot program will begin in Singapore, with plans to expand across the region over the coming year, connecting travellers’ everyday payment apps with local QR networks.
Participating payment providers, including Lakala in Mainland China, Touch ‘n Go Digital in Malaysia, FOMO Pay in Singapore, LINE Pay in Taiwan, VNPay, and Zalopay in Vietnam, will integrate Visa’s capabilities into their QR merchant networks.
Visa is collaborating with Juspay to deliver the necessary technical support, further enhancing the functionality and interoperability of these cross-border payments.
“This collaboration marks a substantial advancement in Asia Pacific’s payments ecosystem,” said T.R. Ramachandran, Visa’s Senior Vice President and Head of Products and Solutions for Asia Pacific.
“By allowing consumers accustomed to QR payments at home to experience the same ease abroad, Visa aims to create a consistent and superior user experience across the region’s QR networks, driving broader adoption.”
For merchants, the integration of QR payments into Visa’s network not only lowers operating costs but also expands their customer reach.
By accommodating local and international users, small to medium-sized businesses, in particular, can benefit from the influx of travellers who rely on QR payments, enhancing their appeal across borders.
According to Visa’s Consumer Payment Attitudes Study, QR payments through digital wallets rank as the second most preferred payment method in Southeast Asia, with card payments leading at 34% and QR close behind at 26%.
The shift towards QR is expected to grow, driven by greater convenience and reduced transaction costs.
As Visa expands this network, it continues its mission to foster a more inclusive payments ecosystem.
“Bringing QR payments into Visa’s traditional card network allows for lower-cost transactions and greater choice for consumers and merchants alike,” Ramachandran noted.
This integration not only promises to break down cross-border payment barriers but also to drive greater financial inclusion, aligning with Visa’s mission to be “the best way to pay and be paid.”
