A recent global study, conducted by iProov in collaboration with Hanover Research, sheds light on the growing concern around AI-generated deepfakes and the vital role of biometric solutions in combating these threats.

The Growing Threat of Deepfakes

Deepfakes, which involve using AI to create hyper-realistic but fake images, videos, or audio, have quickly become a top-tier security concern.

According to the study, deepfakes now rank alongside phishing and social engineering as one of the most prevalent security threats, second only to password breaches and ransomware.

The rapid advancement of deepfake technology has made it easier than ever to manipulate digital content, raising the stakes for organisations that rely on secure identity verification.

The study found that 70% of respondents believe AI-generated attacks will significantly impact their organisations.

However, despite this high level of awareness, there remains a concerning gap between recognising the threat and taking action to mitigate it.

While 73% of organisations are actively implementing cybersecurity measures to address deepfakes, 62% of respondents expressed worry that their organisations are not taking the threat seriously enough.

The Role of Biometric Solutions

Facial biometric technology has emerged as a primary defence against deepfakes.

The study reveals that 75% of organisations are turning to facial biometrics for secure and reliable identity verification, offering a more robust alternative to traditional methods like passwords.

Beyond facial recognition, there is a growing demand for comprehensive biometric solutions that include continuous monitoring, multi-modal biometrics, and advanced liveness detection.

These features are critical for ensuring that the person being verified is not only the correct individual but also present and authentic at the time of verification.

Nearly all respondents (94%) agreed that a biometric security partner should offer more than just software, emphasising the need for evolving services that keep pace with the threat landscape.

Regional Differences in Perception and Preparedness

The threat of deepfakes is global, but regional differences in perception and preparedness were noted in the study.

Organisations in the Asia-Pacific (APAC), Europe, and Latin America (LATAM) regions were more likely to have encountered deepfakes compared to their North American counterparts.

This difference in experience is reflected in the varying levels of concern, with APAC and European organisations showing greater urgency in addressing the threat.

Despite these regional nuances, there is a clear consensus on the potential damage deepfakes can cause. The most common concerns include the loss of sensitive data, reputational damage, and financial penalties.

Financial and IT systems were identified as the most vulnerable to deepfake attacks, underscoring the need for robust cybersecurity measures across all sectors.

Moving Forward: The Need for Proactive Measures

The study’s findings highlight the importance of adopting proactive cybersecurity strategies to combat the growing threat of deepfakes.

While many organisations are already implementing biometric solutions, there is still a significant portion that needs to enhance their defences. Educating employees, conducting regular security audits, and updating systems are crucial steps in mitigating the risks posed by AI-generated threats.

As the use of generative AI continues to expand, organisations must remain vigilant and adaptive.

The study concludes that biometric solutions offer a promising path forward in securing digital interactions, but only if they are part of a broader, continuously evolving cybersecurity strategy.
