Polish cinema lets moviegoers pay for tickets using their eyes

PayEye biometric payment terminal in Polish cinema
IRIS RECOGNITION: Customers register with the PayEye app on their phone to enable payment by eye

Moviegoers at the Nowe Horyzonty Cinema in the Polish city of Wroclaw can now pay for their tickets with their eyes via a biometric payments system that makes use of iris recognition technology.

“The whole system is very simple. All you need to do is download the PayEye application on your phone, then register and top up an express free account,” the cinema explains.

“During the first visit to the Nowe Horyzonty Cinema, a code based on a biometric template will be created, which will be used for secure payments using a special payment terminal.

“From then on, you can pay with the eye — conveniently, safely and without restrictions. The use of the account and the transactions made with the iris of the eye are free.”

Nowe Horyzonty is trialling the iris recognition-based system developed by Polish technology provider PayEye and is the first cinema to join a pilot scheme taking place at some 150 locations in and around Wroclaw, including restaurants, cafes, hotels, supermarkets, swimming pools and beauty salons.

“This is not the script for the next part of the cult movie ‘The Matrix’ — such a feature is very real and available,” Nowe Horyzonty Cinema president Daniel Ratuszniak adds.

“By introducing payment with the eye, we will combine not only security but also modernity and convenience for cinema lovers.

“We are not only open to innovative phenomena in cinema but also to new technologies, which is why we joined the pilot project with PayEye.”
